Books are Better than Screens

January 28, 2023

In this fast paced technology driven era, are books better than screens?

Books have long been the preferred medium of learning for children, as they are often filled with stories and information that can help them to explore and understand the world around them.  However, with the rise of technology, screens such as smart televisions, tablets, and mobile phones, devices have become increasingly popular among children. While these screens offer many benefits, it’s important to consider which medium is best for your child’s learning and development.

Physical Benefits of Reading Books

Books are better  than screens. First, let’s look at some of the physical benefits of reading books over screens. One benefit is that physical books can help improve fine motor skills. Turning pages, holding a book open, and learning how to navigate text all require physical movement which can help strengthen muscles and increase dexterity. Additionally, when kids read physical books without any distractions—such as music or videos—their eyes don’t have to adjust to different lighting levels or objects moving across the page. This helps decrease eye strain and fatigue associated with extended screen time.

Mental Benefits of Reading Books

Reading books also provides mental benefits that screens simply cannot provide. For example, when children read physical books they can build their imaginations by picturing characters and settings on their terms; whereas videos or movies offer a predetermined version of what these characters and settings should look like. Additionally, when kids read physical books they can take their time to absorb the information. This helps them to think more deeply and aids understanding and comprehension. It also encourages critical thinking skills as they analyse plot points, themes, and character development within the stories they’re reading.

Social Benefits of Reading Books

Lastly, reading physical books can provide social benefits as well. When children read with their parents or other family members they are able to engage in discussion and debate about the material they’re reading, which strengthens family bonds; this also helps kids learn communication skills such as empathy and understanding. Additionally, when kids read physical books with their peers they are able to foster meaningful relationships as they share and discuss their opinions.

It’s clear that reading physical books are better than screens as they offer a number of benefits for children, from improved physical dexterity to increased understanding of the material and improved family and social relationships. So the next time your child reaches for a screen, why not suggest that they try picking up a book instead? It could make all the difference.

In today’s digital world,  it is important for children to be exposed to physical forms of entertainment such as reading books instead of screens for fun activities. As outlined in this article there are both physical and mental benefits associated with reading traditional print material versus watching videos or spending time on digital devices such as tablets or smartphones. We hope that after reading this post you have a newfound appreciation for why books are better than screens and should still play an important role in your child’s life!
