Let’s Read Together – Board Books, the Perfect Introduction for babies and Toddlers

Board Books: A Baby’s First Love Affair with Reading

Before a child can talk, before they can point to letters or follow a plot, they can hold a book. They can turn a page (or try to eat one). They can hear a voice they love reading words to them, and feel something warm and good settle in.

That’s where it all begins. And board books are exactly the right tool for the job.

Built for Little Hands

Board books aren’t just picture books printed on thicker paper — they’re designed from the ground up for babies and toddlers. Chunky pages that tiny fingers can actually grip and turn. Rounded corners. Covers that survive being dropped, chewed, and loved relentlessly.

For babies from birth to around 18 months, the best board books are beautifully simple: bold colours, high contrast images, single words or short phrases. Babies are drawn to faces, animals, and everyday objects — a book that shows a dog, a ball, a cup, is genuinely exciting at this age. Their eyes are still developing, and the visual richness of a well-designed board book is doing real work.

What’s Actually Happening When You Read Together

Here’s what’s easy to miss: when you sit with a baby and a board book, you’re not just filling time. You’re building the architecture for everything that comes later.

Every word you say is a word they’re storing. Babies absorb language long before they can speak it. Reading aloud — even to a newborn — fills their world with the rhythms and sounds of language. The more words a child hears in their first two years, the stronger their vocabulary becomes when they start talking.

Repetition is the point, not a problem. Toddlers want the same book read again and again, and that’s not stubbornness — it’s how they learn. Each re-read deepens their understanding, reinforces new words, and gives them the pleasure of anticipation (“I know what happens next!”). Let them lead. Read it as many times as they ask.

You are the story. At this age, a baby isn’t just listening to the book — they’re listening to you. Your voice, your expressions, the way you point to pictures and name things. The warmth of being held while someone reads to them is laying down an association between books and safety, comfort, and love. That association lasts.

The Different Types of Board Books

There is a huge variety of board books available, here are a few that earn their place in any baby’s collection:

High Contrast – Early in their development babies can only differentiate between simple black and white objects

Touch and Feel – Perfect for sensory stimulation, different textures add an extra dimension to this introductory book experience

Lift the Flap – Adds an extra layer of surprise and discovery, and helps keep high interest

Starting a Reading Habit Early

You don’t need a special reading time, a quiet room, or the perfect book. A board book in the pram. A few pages before a nap. Reading the names on the cereal boxes in the same voice you’d use for a storybook. It all counts.

The habit of reading starts before children understand what reading is. By the time they’re ready to recognise letters and follow longer stories, the children who’ve been surrounded by books from the beginning already know one important thing: books are good. Books are worth your time.

Give them that head start. It’s one of the most lasting gifts you can offer.
